Texas Children's Cancer Center

DEC MY ROOM began decorating rooms in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at the Texas Children's Cancer Center (TCCC) in late 2007. These patients are expected to be in the hospital for at least 4 weeks. The patients and their families have in most cases been battling cancer for several years before they require transplant therapies. DEC quickly set the ambitions goal of decorating every child’s room on the BMT in its first year. We met that goal. So, by the end of 2008, every child admitted to the BMT receives a personalized and decorated room.

Soon DEC wanted to expand. So TCCC doctors, social workers, child life specialists and staff began identifying other TCCC patients who had prolonged hospitalization. Now, in 2010, DEC is proud to say that every TCCC patient who is admitted for 3 weeks or longer has a room decorated just for that child.

In addition to prolonged stays, DEC has recently expanded to create a special surprise for children who are in the hospital on their birthday. Just recently, DEC held a pizza party for one child who celebrated his birthday in the hospital.
